Meet Luiza Holub: Linocut, Colour & the Everyday

There’s something special about a handmade print. Unlike a perfectly reproduced digital image, there’s an element of unpredictability — a little texture here, a line that shifts there, perhaps a happy accident that makes one print feel slightly different from the next.

It’s this beautiful unpredictability that sits at the heart of Luiza Holub’s work.

An artist, printmaker and illustrator originally from Poland, Luiza is now based in Sheffield, United Kingdom, where she works primarily with traditional linocut and monoprint techniques. Her practice embraces the handmade process, combining traditional printmaking methods with a contemporary approach.

What makes Luiza’s work particularly captivating is the balance between spontaneity and intention. Her drawings often begin quickly, capturing an idea before it has time to become overly considered or refined. This instinctive approach creates the simple, expressive lines that have become such a distinctive part of her prints.

From there, the process becomes more deliberate. Shapes are carefully constructed, colours considered and layers built by hand — yet the final result is never entirely predictable. Surface texture, slight misalignments and those wonderfully unexpected moments that happen during the printing process are embraced rather than corrected.

And we think that’s part of the charm.

Luiza’s work has a fascination with the familiar: common objects, everyday life, flora and the human form. Rather than transforming these subjects into something elaborate, she celebrates their simplicity, using bold colour and pared-back compositions to draw attention to the things we might otherwise overlook.

There’s a sense of calm in her work, even when the colours are bold. Her prints feel expressive without being loud, considered without feeling overly polished.
